Group Financial Reporting for High-End Manufacturing Service Group

Key Concepts

SQL, Azure, ERP and MES System, Medallion Architecture

Overview

A high-end manufacturing service group had recently expanded through the acquisition of several businesses. Each plant operated independently using different ERP and MES systems. Consequently, the finance team faced the significant challenge of manually gathering financial data from various systems, consolidating it, and preparing executive-level reports.

The team faced few challenges:

Multiple ERP and MES systems across newly acquired plants

Lack of standardisation in financial data and reporting formats

Manual collection, export, and transformation of data using Excel

Significant time spent reconciling and preparing group financial reports

Our Solution

We partnered closely with the Group Head of Finance to design and implement a centralised data and reporting platform, following these key steps:

Data Discovery and Extraction

Collaborated with individual business areas to identify and extract critical tables and fields from their existing ERP and MES systems.

Azure Environment Setup
  • Provisioned a dedicated Azure subscription under the client’s tenant.
  • Configured appropriate access roles and governance policies.
  • Deployed a dedicated SQL Database to serve as the core data warehouse.
Secure Data Access
  • Established integration runtimes on each on-premise server.

  • Enabled secure extraction of necessary data without disrupting existing operations.

Data Transformation and Standardisation
  • Developed Azure Data Factory pipelines to perform cleaning, transformation, and standardisation of extracted data.

  • Harmonised different source formats into a consistent structure, making the data ready for integration.

Data Integration and Structuring
  • Built additional pipelines to create group-level tables and bespoke views.
  • Adopted the Medallion Architecture best practices to structure data into Bronze (raw), Silver (cleaned), and Gold (aggregated) layers.
Reporting Layer Creation
  • Created a dedicated Finance workspace within Power BI.
  • Developed intuitive, performance-optimised financial reports.
  • Enabled final calculation steps and custom metrics within Power BI for flexibility.

Business Benefits

Standardisation Across Plants

Identified and aligned differences in reporting formats to enable consistent, comparable group reporting.

Efficiency Gains

Eliminated manual Excel exports and consolidations, saving the finance team significant time and effort.

Self-Service Analytics

Empowered the finance team to create and explore their own reports using group-level standardised data.

Operational Optimisation

Enabled better OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) tracking and improved visibility into Inventory, Purchasing, Sales, and Cashflow management.

CONCLUSION

Through a thoughtful combination of Azure infrastructure, data engineering, and BI development, we transformed a highly manual, error-prone financial reporting process into a scalable, self-service analytics platform for the finance team and executive leadership.
